Intimate, peaceful, vibrant and still faithful to the gallery’s original initiative, the Jordan Art Gallery exhibits contemporary works of fine art and fine craft from the Niagara region. The selections are diverse and evolving, and represent artistic practices that include painting, sculpture, mixed media/assemblage, textile, wood, glass and ceramic from many of the most practiced artists working in the region today. In addition, the gallery features a stellar list of guest artists. Established in 2000, the Jordan Art Gallery is guided by the efforts of nine artists/proprietors, who staff the gallery and are pleased to welcome visitors, assist, and share their knowledge of the various artworks on display. Come visit. Be surprised. Schedule: Saturday 11 a.m.-noon Lisa Skog will be demonstrating carving tiles destined for the raku process. Visitors will be invited to make a coaster using stamping or carving techniques which will be fired and available for pickup at the gallery at a later date. Saturday 1-2 p.m. Joe Speck will be demonstrating the techniques of Scrafitto and painting on glass. Saturday 3-4 p.m. George Langbroek will be making a work of art using fine stainless steel mesh as his medium. Using only his hands – no other tools – bending and forming the material into a bas relief dancing figure. Sunday 11a.m. - noon Greta Hildebrand will be demonstrating her needle felting technique using layered wool, silk and plant fibres, bonded together using a range of barbed needles. Greta’s images are captured while on walks, while driving the backroads of Niagara, especially the escarpment above Jordan and from where she currently lives on the Eastern edge of Lake Erie in Ridgeway. Originally a handspinner, Greta has worked with animal and plants fibres for many years transforming their colours and textures into aesthetic creations. With a background in painting, fibres have now become a medium with which to bring her imagery to life. Sunday 1-2 p.m. Mori McCrea will be reading from Love and Lunch, her newest collection of poems, which explores love’s battlefields and blessings, through the metaphor of food. Sunday 3-4 p.m. Using oils, Darrell will demonstrate his unique approach to painting a portrait of a bird. In this hour-long demo, you will learn the keys to successful painting, including composition, points of interest, tone, colour value and temperature. |
